Dragon-type Pokemon have historically been some of the strongest monsters in the series, and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduced a whole new crop of these behemoths including the Legendary Koraidon and Miraidon. Although the Dragon type has evolved over the course of the series, seeing a nerf with the introduction of Fairy types in Gen 6, they still are some of the most popular mons among Pokemon Scarlet and Violet players. However, there are some clear standouts from the group who are notable for their strength, rarity, or just simply having an awesome design.
Despite Gen 1 only containing a single Dragon-type evolutionary line, many players came to both love and fear Dragonite due to its charming design but terrifying presence on Lance of the Elite Four’s team. As the generations have gone on, more Dragon types have been introduced in a variety of ways including not just new evolutionary lines, but as Legendaries, pseudo-Legendaries, Mega Evolutions, and now even Pokemon Scarlet and Violet‘s Paradox Pokemon. For the purpose of this ranking, the final stage mon will represent the entire evolutionary line as one entry including any Megas or regional variants.
S-Tier
- Dragonite
- Salamence
- Rayquaza
- Garchomp
- Dialga
- Palkia
- Giratina
- Reshiram
- Zekrom
- Ultra Necrozma
- Dragapult
- Eternatus
- Koraidon
- Miraidon
These mons are the cream of the crop when it comes to the Dragon type as these are some of the most fearsome, powerful, and memorable the typing has to offer. Some like Ultra Necrozma and Eternatus are memorable as some of the series’ toughest bosses, while others like Dragonite, Koraidon, and Miraidon captured players’ hearts with their charm. Many of these mons like Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Reshiram, and Zekrom are iconic mascots for their respective games, playing important roles within their stories. Whether it’s due to their strength, popularity, or memorability, these are the best Dragon types in Pokemon.
A-Tier
- Mega Charizard X
- Flygon
- Latias
- Latios
- Haxorus
- Kyruem
- Goodra
- Zygarde
- Dracovish
- Tatsugiri
- Baxcalibur
- Roaring Moon
- Walking Wake
While not as popular as others, these Dragon types are still excellent in their own right, but fall just short of being great, like Pokemon Scarlet and Violet‘s Tatsugiri, a little fish with powerful potential but needs Dondozo as a partner to excel. Others like Flygon and Haxorous have fantastic designs, but their stats just don’t hold up compared to other Dragon types. Some Legendaries like Latios, Latias, and Zygarde are solid, but just don’t quite hold a candle to other Dragon-type Legendaries in terms of strength or memorability.
B-Tier
- Mega Ampharos
- Kingdra
- Mega Sceptile
- Altaria
- Hydreigon
- Tyrantrum
- Noivern
- Kommo-o
- Guzzlord
- Naganadel
- Flapple
- Appletun
- Duraludon
- Regidrago
Most of these creatures are solid Dragon types, but have some sort of flaw that keeps them from being that noteworthy. Mega Sceptile and Mega Ampharos are interesting due to only gaining the Dragon type while Mega Evolved, but are ultimately forgettable when compared to other Dragon types and are unavailable entirely in recent generations due to the removal of Mega Evolution starting in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Despite being pseudo-Legendaries, mons like Kommo-o and Hydreigon are held back from greatness due to their poor type combinations and difficulty in obtaining in their home games.
